Your dentist may refer you to see a Periodontist because they have determined that periodontal disease is present. Periodontal disease is diagnosed by close examination of the teeth and gums. Your dentist may have detected bleeding gums, looseness of the gums around the teeth (periodontal pocket), receding gums, loose teeth or noted the presence of infection. Your x-rays may also show that there has been some loss of the bone that holds your teeth in place.

The following signs may indicate that you have periodontal disease and need to see a Periodontist:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums;
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard foods;
  • Loose teeth;
  • Change in the position of your teeth;
  • Bad breath; and
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, making your teeth look longer than before.

Periodontal disease is easier to manage if it is detected at an early stage. If you are concerned that yourself or a family member may have gum disease please call 03 9853 7700 to request an appointment. We are happy to see you without a referral.
